Atlanta January 2014 Market Reaches New Highs

When the January 2014 Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market closing bell sounded at 6 p.m. Tuesday, the show had posted huge gains across all measures, with national and international attendance and first-to-market buyer totals leading a litany of advances.

On-site actual registrations for the eight-day market showed healthy year-over-year gains with increases as high as 53 percent posted on key attendance days. Preliminary hotel occupancy results reports indicated an increase in the average length of stay per attendee to 42 days, the highest recorded since 2006.

Growth posted in all national regions beyond the show’s principal Southeast base-including the Midwest and Far West-plus international beyond the Americas delivered global buying power to exhibitors across all product categories in showrooms and trade show booths.

The Market’s first-time buyer total-a measure of new buyers having not attended any previous Atlanta market-saw high double-digit increases. Meanwhile, reports from exhibitors throughout the Market, across showrooms and trade show booths, echoed strong sales-more orders, larger orders, from new and returning accounts.

Powering momentum throughout the Market was the new AmericasMart App, which made its debut to rave reviews and, according to iTunes, was among the 10 most popular apps in all business-to-business categories.

The Studio at KidsWorld In Dallas Market Center Welcomes New Resources

The Studio at KidsWorld, an 8,000-square-foot shared showroom, is offering new resources this week at Dallas Total Home & Gift Market, January 15-21.

The Studio features leading manufacturers of gifts, home décor, lighting, toys, books, furniture, apparel and accessories and is located on the World Trade Center 8th floor. The complete floor is devoted to products for infants, children, tweens and expectant mothers. The combined resources create a comprehensive floor dedicated to these products, making it the only facility of its kind in the nation.

New lines joining The Studio include Aden + Anais, Cherished Moments, Corsican Furniture, Elf Magic, First Friends, Kids Basics & Heirloom, Let’s Cheer/Let’s Score, PlanToys and Puj.

Holiday Retail Sales Come in at NRF Expectations

Severe winter weather did not dampen December retail sales as shoppers took advantage of heavy promotions and last-minute deals. According to the National Retail Federation – the world’s largest retail trade association – December retail sales, which excludes automobiles, gas stations and restaurants, increased 0.4 percent seasonally adjusted month-to-month, and 4.6 percent unadjusted year-over-year.

Total holiday retail sales, which includes November and December sales, increased 3.8 percent to $601.8 billion, which was in line with NRF’s projected forecast of 3.9 percent and $602.1 billion. In addition, non-store holiday sales, which is an indicator of online and e-commerce sales, grew 9.3 percent to $95.7 billion.

“Despite facing a truncated holiday season, severe weather, and shaky consumer confidence, retailers rose to the challenge and executed their strategies with proven success,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Today’s holiday sales numbers are a testament to a resilient industry that knows what their customers want, when they want it and how they want to get it. Considering that retail sales are an important barometer when measuring the overall health of our national economy, this report provides a level of true optimism that the recovery is picking up steam, and once again, retail leads the way.”

Las Vegas Market Features Record Number of Gift & Home Décor Temporary Exhibits in Building C This Winter

International Market Centers has announced that the Las Vegas Market's largest-ever convergence of temporary gift, home décor and furniture exhibitors-will be presented in Building C during January 26-30, 2014, at World Market Center Las Vegas.

Temporary exhibit space leasing in Building C has skyrocketed, with the winter market showcasing 340 temporary gift and home décor exhibits - the largest in the history of Las Vegas Market. Overall, temporary exhibits are experiencing record increases, running more than 10% ahead of last year, and temporary presentations on c-ONE, a new showcase of directional home décor and specialty tabletop suppliers launched just six months ago, as well as B2, a collection of home furnishings and furniture temporary exhibits, will be completely sold-out for the winter market.

"The incredible growth in temporary exhibitors - and in particular in gift and home décor resources in Building C - validates the industry's support for our three-phase strategic growth plan for Las Vegas Market," said Dorothy Belshaw, president of Gift & Home Décor, International Market Centers. "Our spotlight on better home décor and the realignment of temporary space in Buildings B and C are making Las Vegas Market the fastest growing furniture, home décor and gift market in the western United States."

With the addition of seven recently confirmed temporary exhibitors, the newly launched c-ONE cross-category showcase is sold-out, with a total of 40 resources presented in temporary and permanent presentations. Recently confirmed c-ONE exhibitors include Acrila Furniture's Toobre Collection; the BD Collection of Italian furnishings by Brodarick Design; Interior Illusions, providing contemporary furniture, lighting and home décor; Ma Maison de Campagne, a supplier of fine art and accessories; Roberta Schilling artful furniture and home décor; The Elizabeth Lucas Company, offering limited edition art, furniture and soft goods; and gift and accessories supplier the Whitey Board Company. These firms join announced c-ONE's curated collection of leading suppliers, including Alessi, Ann Gish, FermobUSA, Gold Leaf Design Group, Jonathan Adler, Match, Michael Aram, SkLO, Trowbridge Gallery and VIETRI.

The realignment and relocation of the MADE and TREND categories on C11 also is fueling growth in temporary exhibits. Notable newcomers in the MADE collection include Ann Made Candles, Crosby & Taylor, Lizzy James Designs, Maurice Milleur, Objects with Purpose and Vital Industries. Exciting new temporary exhibitors in the TREND segment include Bed Head Pajamas, Be Home, Charles Viancin, Mixture and Scojo NY. A variety of new tabletop resources also are expanding on C11, including many new-to-market firms: Di Potter, Enrico Products, Hester & Cook Design Group, Merritt International, Parison, Sobremesa by Greenheart and West Creation.

NY NOW Pre-Registration Shows Double-Digit Increase

Pre-registration for the winter 2014 NY NOW, The Market for Home & Lifestyle (formerly NYIGF), is outpacing the same period one year ago by 11%, with 31,000+ individuals, representing 22,000+ businesses from the U.S. and around the world planning to attend the market, Saturday, February 1, through Thursday, February 6, 2014, at New York City’s Jacob K. Javits Convention Center and Passenger Ship Terminal Pier 94.

“Registration for the winter market has been steady, and we’ve seen a spike in retailer activity following the conclusion of the Christmas and New Year holidays,” said Christian Falkenberg, NY NOW director and GLM senior vice president. “Our year-over-year registrations are 11% ahead, and we expect several thousand more attendees to pre-register in the three weeks remaining before opening of the winter 2014 edition.”

A majority of the 22,000+ businesses registered to date are established retail enterprises, such as brick and mortar retailers, online retailers and cart/kiosk retailers. According to Falkenberg, “Some 1,500 of the pre-registrants are first-time registrants for the market, and we plan to welcome them with a series of pre-market webinars, as well as onsite seminars and at-market “newcomers’ lunches,” co-sponsored by Giftware News and Baby & Kids, to help orient these newcomers to the New York market.” Information and registration is available online at nynow.com/programs.

Geographically, NY NOW registrants represent all 50 U.S.states, and to date, 50+ countries are represented. According to Falkenberg, “One in every three winter 2014 market pre-registrants are from outside the region, making NY NOW a national market as well as an international marketplace.” He identifies Canada as the largest source of international pre-registrants, with South America, Asia and Europe also well-represented.

NY NOW registration is free for qualified retailers through Tuesday, January 28, at 11:59PM (EST). After that date, registration costs $60 for qualified buyers. Marika Signs Multi-Year License Agreement With Stone Mountain Accessories

Marika, the largest division of FAM BRANDS has signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Stone Mountain Accessories for women’s sportbags and handbags. The first collection to be produced under the Marika label will ship to retailers for an August debut date. The new licensee will enhance the brand’s expanding portfolio of licensees and complement the existing Marika active apparel.

John W. Spotts, EVP International Business Development and Licensing for FAM Brands eagerly began his licensing mission in mid-year 2013 for the corporation with super brand, Marika. John emphasizes along with Frank Zarabi, CEO/Owner of FAM BRANDS: “We are pleased that the well-known and highly regarded Stone Mountain Accessories has joined Marika’s emergent licensing portfolio. The new collections will follow Marika's emphasis of function, performance and exciting design aesthetics, including signature details and themes that differentiate the brand from the competitors. Large totes, duffels, gym bags, yoga bags, messengers, backpacks, cinch-sacks and cross-body bags are the major direction in silhouettes. Cathedral Art Changes Name to CA Gift

Cathedral Art Metal Company has announced that it is changing its name to CA Gift. The change is reflected in its 2014 catalogs and at Winter Markets now underway.

Leo Tracey, CA Gift president of the family-operated business, notes that the new name reflects changes in the marketplace that demand more unique and innovative product. He stresses that CA Gift will continue to offer the inspirational product that made the company a leader in its field for more than eight decades, in addition to introducing new categories that celebrate life’s occasions.

“Our new name includes a subtitle that succinctly describes our new entity: Be Inspired”, says Tracey. “The line will include memorial gifts and sentiment-driven impulse items created in a wide range of materials and designs.
